About Cynthia

Cynthia Young, hailing originally from Anderson, Indiana, spent her formative years immersed in imaginative play and outdoor exploration. Her time at the local schools of Anderson allowed her to cultivate a profound love for art, which captivated her from an early age. Although it wasn't until her high school years that she envisioned a career as an artist, Cynthia always sensed a pull towards a creative path. This led her to pursue a major in Interior Design at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior/Environmental Design.

Cynthia's artistic journey following college was diverse and multifaceted. While she initially gravitated towards design, her enduring passion for art never diminished. Cynthia has expertly woven her design expertise with her artistic inclinations, a fusion that is clearly evident in her work at the SullivanMunce Cultural Center. Joining in various influential roles such as Art Center Director and Executive Director, she has demonstrated leadership in art exhibitions and community engagement initiatives, showing a particular skill in fundraising efforts. Her endeavors in creating and nurturing an endowment fund highlight her dedication to art along with her entrepreneurial mindset.

Though her professional life kept her in close contact with the art world, her personal artistic journey continued to blossom. Motivated by her surroundings and human experiences, Cynthia takes pleasure in the complexities of drawing and painting the human figure, as well as natural elements like animals and plants. Her creative process is both fluid and organic, allowing each piece to develop naturally without extensive pre-planning—a method that keeps her continuously inspired and enthusiastic.

Cynthia is dedicated to sharpening her skills and has pursued mastery through trial and error, taking inspiration from esteemed masters such as Robert Kushner, Edgar Degas, Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, and the contemporary influence of Melinda Cootsana. Her work is characterized by a blend of artistic ability, design sensibility, and a discerning eye for color.

Among Cynthia's public works, the mural for a local elementary school, created with the assistance of parent volunteers, and the Walking Man sculpture in Zionsville Town Hall, stand out as her personal favorites. These projects are especially gratifying for her due to their emphasis on community participation and engagement.

While Cynthia is not formally connected with any artist organizations or galleries, her artwork has been featured in numerous exhibitions including the Minnetrista Annual Juried Art Show, the Indiana State Fair, and the Flava Fresh Series. Her dedication to artistic expression also earned her a nomination for the Hoosier Women Artists.

Beyond the canvas, Cynthia firmly believes in art as a cornerstone of society that spurs economic growth and enriches cultural well-being. This belief propels her aspiration to devote herself entirely to being a full-time artist, where she can focus on creating with the freedom and intensity her art deserves. Through her work, she embodies the belief that art is essential, not only as a personal passion but as a vital component of a thriving community.
